Modern Middle East Wiki Project Over the course of the next week we will be looking at the conflicts in the modern Middle East. What each group’s goal should be is to create an inviting page that details the issues facing your country currently, as well as providing some of the historical background chronicling what has happened to your country since the decline of the Ottoman Empire. Each student will be graded on three components; your wiki itself, the quiz your group creates, and your completion of other group’s quizzes. The project will be worth 100 points in total. Country List:Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Libya, Israel-Palestine, Turkey, Saudi Arabia Students will: Create a wikipage on a modern country of the Middle East that reflects parameters below Create a wikipage that teaches their colleagues about their country Create a quiz that fellow students can complete based on the information in the wikipage
Parameters for the Wiki: Essential Questions: What is the significance of this region/country to the Middle East? What is the significance in the region/country for the world at large? What is the significance for the region/country in terms of the United States?
Content Questions: What is the basic history of this location since the Ottoman Empire? Who are some of the key players, past and present? What are the factors, both internal and external, that have contributed/are contributing to the activities of this country? Structure: Your Wiki should include: 1. A primary source 2. At least one video 3. 2 news articles from different sources (Links and summary of article) -use only major market newspapers or the bbc 4. Graphics/pictures A summary article about the page written in your team’s own words 5. Basic timeline showing 7 – 10 key events in your region’s history since the Ottoman Empire 6. 2 different maps showing area (perhaps contrasting periods?) 7. 20th Century issues (pre 1945 and post 1945) 8. 21st Century issues (pre 9/11 and post 9/11) 9. Key personnel past and present 10. Other items of interest? Quiz Requirements Questions should be answerable by you, and all members of your group. There should be at least 5 objective (multiple choice style) questions and at least two open-ended questions (typically why questions).
